OttawaStart's Weekly Event Round-Up: Ribs, Oysters, Submarines, Jazz Fest, and much more...

[

](http://ottawastart.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/weekly-event-roundup250.gif) Once again it’s a busy, busy weekend in Ottawa. I asked a few of my favourite bloggers, twitter-ers, friends and followers: ** “What event are you most excited about this week?” **

**

**

We’ll kick things of with a pick from our newest contributor, Jim Watson.  I think it’s safe to say he attends more local events each week than any other person in our city – so consider him an expert when it comes to picking interesting community events.

** Jim Watson , Mayor of Ottawa:

** **

COMMUNITY:

** ** Year2Give ** is a volunteer project started this year by Christine Taylor. On Saturday, June 25 at 9:30, along with all volunteers who want to help, she will be painting a 15 story building at 215 Wurtenburg Street for Ottawa Community Housing. What a great way for people to help out and directly impact their community!

** @ottguy , one of the best people to follow on Twitter:

 FOOD:

** It’s easily my favourite festival in Ottawa and last year it was so successful it literally shook the earth (OK, maybe the earthquake was caused by all of the weight we gained from attending) – but RibFest is back baby! ** The Chicken and Rib Cook-off on the Sparks Street Mall ** will lure you for lunch, dinner and sadly in my case sometimes even for breakfast. Bring cash, an appetite and plan to get a beverage from separate vendors or bring your own as most cook off venues don’t sell beverages – just meat. Oh, and don’t be like the lady I stood behind last year who complained that the vendor didn’t sell water OR salad options.

**

 FOOD:

** This Sunday (June 26 12:00 pm - 11:00 pm), the Whalesbone will be holding its ** 4th annual Bytowne OysterFest ** , featuring freshly shucked oysters, bites from the Whalesbone Sustainable Fish and Oyster Supply (504A Kent at Arlington), and live entertainment. Sample the “Walleye Burger”, a popular Whalesbone “Brown Bag Lunch” option. Watch local Chefs compete with one another in the “Oyster Shuck-Off” competition. Enjoy performances in the Oyster Supply’s parking lot by local bands Soul Jazz Orchestra, Greenfield Main, Devilaires, and DJ L T Ruck. Tickets are $25 pp and can be purchased at The Whalesbone Oyster House (430 Bank Street) and Sustainable Fish and Oyster Supply.

** Andrew King , artist: **

**

 SUBMARINES:

** Periscope up! It’s the ** Radio Control Model Submarine Regatta At Dow’s Lake ** . The 10th anniversary of Ontario’s SubComon radio control submarine club has picked Dow’s Lake this year for their regatta of model subs! It will take place June 25 at the Dow’s Lake Pavilion. Prepare the miniature depth charges and watch submarine models ply the waters of Dow’s Lake!

is on Saturday! Maybe one of the best summer traditions in Ottawa. Usually 25 to 30 thousand people on the grounds at Rideau Hall, the GG's place. Family breakfast begins at 8am, the bears and local mascots parade in just after 9:30; there's a carnival on site, but the busiest place is the BASH tent, where real doctors and nurses diagnose and fix the problems with children's bears! Everything is free except the food. And you can join tours of the official residence.

and this year it runs from June 22 to 26. There’s so much history behind the red serge, and it figures so prominently in our culture. It’s the kind of event you must see at least once in your life. The Musical Ride is always so memorable, and it’s perfect for young families. They put on the great show: the regal horses, sniffily smart police dogs, the daring parachutists! Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs as well as a donation to the RCMP Foundation.

. I've never felt quite so Canadian as when I saw the musical ride for the first time, and this year's Sunset Ceremies will also include the RCMP/Ottawa Police Service Pipes and Drums and Canada Border Service Agency Detector Dogs. And it's all free! (Though donation boxes will be set up on site to collect donations for the RCMP Foundation.)

, an annual food drive that I chair. The event happens on Saturday and Sunday at participating grocery stores across the city. I'll be at the Westboro Superstore (190 Richmond Road) on Saturday and Hartman’s Your Independent Grocer (296 Bank Street) on Sunday. Drop by and make a donation to the Ottawa Food Bank, or better yet – join us! We are still looking for volunteers at these locations and other stores across the city. this year. That's when a stellar collection of Canadian musicians, including Laila Biala, Mark McLean, Chet Doxas, Francois Bourassa, and locals Brian Browne and Mike Essoudry's Mash Potato Mashers will be playing. Or try the risk-free noon hour stages in Confederation Park and at the Rideau Centre: the local artists there show what Ottawa is capable of all year long: great jazz!
