** ** Thursday, October 24: Babes 4 Breasts **

Every year, a collection of fantastic musicians gather to raise money for various breast cancer charities. This year’s show will be at the Southminster United Church. This year’s line-up will include Lyndell Montgomery, Matthew Barber, James Keelaghan, and founders Ana Miura and Amanda Rheaume. Great music and a great cause!

** ** Friday, October 25: Nature Nocturne Halloween Bash **

The Museum of Nature is hosting their seventh Nature Nocturne night, and adding some extra features for a special Halloween edition. Along with a live DJ they have two bands performing, Montreal’s Plants and Animals and Ottawa’s Hilotrons. The dinosaurs are scary enough during the day, I bet they’ll be even spookier for this event. And did you know the museum is haunted ?

** ** Friday, October 25: Modulo Film Premiere **

The Modulo documentary premiere is being presented at the Mercury Lounge this Friday, October 25. Modulo is a short documentary profiling three Ottawa individuals who build and perform on modular synthesizers. Their passion for analogue synths helps reveal some the ground breaking inventions of near-forgotten Ottawa synth pioneer, Hugh Le Caine. After the screening, there’ll be live performances by Muffwiggler, Edmund Eagan and Hard Science.

** ** Friday, October 25: The 2013 Bywords John Newlove Poetry Award **

9pm at Ottawa International Writers Festival, Knox Presbyterian Church, 120 Lisgar, FREE Admission. Join us for the launch of The Tiger with the Crooked Mouth by Jenna Jarvis, the 2012 recipient of the John Newlove Poetry Award. Featuring readings by this year’s honourable mentions and award recipient (to be announced at the reading), plus music by Jill Zmud.

** ** Friday, October 25: CKCU Funding Drive Accoustic Sessions **

CKCU FM’s annual funding drive kicks off with Acoustic Sessions this Friday night at The Daily Grind. The evening of music will feature live performances by David Pierce of Ornaments, Dynamite Motel, Cody Smith of The Apollohs, Kevin N Hell and Rich Chris. This is a great occasion to support community radio and local artists!

** ** Friday, October 25: Sixth Annual Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Night **

The Kiwanis Club of Ottawa West offers an evening of comedy along with Newport’s pizza and cash bar. Proceeds support the Multifaith Housing Initiative. From 6:45-10 p.m. at the Ron Kolbus Centre.

Close to a hundred Ottawa and area artists sell their works indoors at the St.Elias Centre while continuing to showcase the developing artistic heritage of Canada and its people. 10-5pm. Free parking and free admission at St. Elias Centre. **

** ** Monday, October 28: Afrocentric Jazz Monday at Le Petit Chicago **

For jazz listeners in the know, Monday late nights at Le Petit Chicago have been the go-to place for many years to hear excellent performances and unexpected jam combos, run by a trio led by Zakari Frantz (who also plays in the Souljazz Orchestra). And the beer and the cover are reasonably priced, too! This Monday, Zak has invited his Souljazz compatriot Pierre Chrétien and Montreal trumpeter Rachel Therrien to join the trio for something new: an Afrocentric night of spiritual jazz, including pieces by masters like Andrew Hill, McCoy Tyner, Salah Ragab, Bobby Hutcherson, Mulatu Astatke, and Dave Holland.

** ** Monday, October 28: Tar Sands, Pipelines in Your Backyard, and Clean Energy - A Conversation **

Ecology Ottawa and the Nobel Women’s Initiative host this discussion about energy that features Jody Williams, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for her work with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, as well as Joanna Kerr, Executive Director of Greenpeace Canada, Julia Sanchez, President-CEO of the Canadian Council for International Co-operation and Ottawa resident and organizer Tinda Sebe-Sikaneta. It’s 7-8:30 p.m. at the Mayfair Theatre. **

Matthew Paravan is six years old and suffers from a very rare Inflammatory Brain Disease. Matthew suffers constant seizures, 15-20 per day on average. Regardless, Matthew is fighting bravely and is an inspiration to us all. Crush Improv will be hosting a benefit show for Matthew and his family. At the Heart & Crown in the Byward Market. Show starts at 8pm. **
