** Thursday, June 11: Festival Franco Ontarien ** The 40th edition of the Festival Franco-Ontarien kicks off on Thursday and is being held until Saturday, June 14. This year again, the family-friendly festival, which celebrates francophone music and culture, is being held at Major Hill Park and will present popular artists from French Canada including Éric Lapointe, Kain, Loco Locass and Zachary Richard among others. _ – Eliane Laberge, Eventful Capital _ ** Friday, June 12: Art Battle Ottawa Regional Finals ** Those of you who enjoy visual arts should check out the Ottawa Art Battle Regional Finals this Friday night at Maker Space North. The unique event organized across Canadian cities, brings 12 local painters together for a live painting competition. The regional finals will crown the Ottawa champion who’ll go on to represent the Nation’s capital at the annual National Championship going down later this summer to crown the top Canadian painter of the year. _ – Eliane Laberge, Eventful Capital _ ** Friday, June 12: Indigenous Walks: Kwe 1.0 and Asinabka Films ** Indigenous Walks is holding a special guided tour, on and near Parliament Hill, focused on Indigenous women and their stories. After the walk, the Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival and SAW Gallery will screen short films about empowerment for Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people. Both events are pay-what-you-can; funds will help bring the Walking with our Sisters memorial to Ottawa this fall. It will be a sneak peek at her upcoming CD, and feature a very different jazz repertoire: music from and inspired by film adaptations of children’s stories. She told OttawaJazzScene.ca that she’ll be singing show tunes and jazz standards – music that’s at once “carefree, questioning, and melancholy”, like childhood. Yoxon has been a major force in Ottawa’s jazz scene, releasing two CDs and performing in many projects. For more than four years, her jazz series at the Mercury Lounge was a Monday night staple.
