** Thursday, September 6: Festival Outaouais Emergent (FOÉ) **

The Festival Outaouais Emergent, also known as the FOÉ, kicked off yesterday and runs until Sunday in the Old Hull neighbourhood of Gatineau. This 5-day event puts emphasis on local emerging talent from around the Outaouais region. Now in its 5th year, the festival has grown to include programming which combines music, visual arts and performing arts. This year’s highlights include performances by Ariane Moffatt, Qualité Motel, La Bronze, Nomadic Massive and Tricia Foster just to name a few. This is definitely an event worth attending if you want to encourage local talent and discover new sounds emanating from Québec!

** Friday, September 7: Caridad Cruz 20th Anniversary Concert at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage **

It’s been 20 years since Cuban dynamo Caridad Cruz first started singing professionally. She’s now a Canadian citizen and an integral part of the Ottawa jazz scene, but she hasn’t lost any of that energy. For this anniversary concert, she’ll be joined by master Cuban pianist Miguel de Armas and fine Ottawa trumpeter Rick Rangno, as well as other local Latin musicians.

** Saturday, September 8: My Heart Is An Idiot **

Found Magazine’s 10th Anniversary tour. In celebration of co-editor Davy Rothbart’s new collection of personal essays, Peter Rothbart’s new album & the launch of the latest issue.

I’m including this because it sounds charming to me. Not to mention Pressed has the most delicious sandwiches in Ottawa & probably beyond, a fun & friendly atmosphere. Starts at 7pm at Pressed Cafe, 750 Gladstone.

** Saturday, September 8: Carleton Place Dragon Boat Festival **

The Carleton Place Dragon Boat Festival is being held at the Carleton Place Canoe Club this Saturday, with the first race scheduled to start at 9am. The venue is a great place for racing dragon boats because spectators can line the shores of the Mississippi River and be about 10m away from the teams as they race down the 400m course. In addition to the races, you’ll find food and drink vendors on-site, entertainment in Riverside Park over the lunch hour and an abundance of clean washrooms. There’s lots of parking at the site, too.

** Monday, September 10: Bon Iver at the Ottawa Folk Festival **

The line-up for this year’s Ottawa Folk Festival is out of this world. How can I pick one artist to recommend? The only reason I’m not telling you to go see Kathleen Edwards on Friday (go see her because her new album makes the hairs on my arms stand up) is because Bon Iver is playing on the Monday. Really, how likely is he to come back to Ottawa? He makes the most beautiful music. Here’s a tune from his latest album. Just wait until the 1:27 mark!
