** Thursday, February 26: Tool Basics ** Ottawa’s new tool library is more than just a place to borrow stuff. Sign up for the Ottawa Tool Library’s “Tool Basics” session and learn how to wield essential household tools like drills, hammers and saws. It’s “circuit training” for home repairs! Check their schedule for upcoming events, too. _ – Denise Deby , Green Living Ottawa _ ** Friday, February 27: The Golden Dogs Live ** This Friday night, Beau’s All Natural and House and Targ present The Golden Dogs live in concert. The high-energy power pop band, who’s currently on an album release tour for their new effort 3 1/2, will be performing alongside Ottawa garage punk rock band Ornaments and Robots! Everywhere!! Plus, you get to eat perogies, drink beer and play arcades while you take in the live music. Win-win! _ – Eliane Laberge, Eventful Capital _ ** Friday, February 27: The AB Series ** Ottawa’s nexus for global poetry, music and innovative arts. Brecken Hancock & Fred Wah, Raw Sugar Café, 8pm. A chance to hear excellent poetry, mingle & enjoy fine treats. _ – Amanda Earl , Bywords _ ** Saturday, February 28: Carleton University Chemistry Magic Show and Activity Centre ** The one-hour magic show is filled with amazing glow-in-the-dark substances, fantastic colour changes, spontaneous combustion reactions and much more. In the Activity Centre kids can make ice cream with liquid nitrogen and slime. They can also learn about pleasant and stinky smells, the chemistry of wine and chocolate, and see amazing fluorescent and phosphorescent minerals. Seating is limited. If the theatre is full, classrooms nearby will be available where attendees can watch the show on large screens. Hands-on Activity Centre. Two shows at 11 am & 2 pm. Now it’s time to meet some of the players you’ll see on the pitch this season! Supporter group Stony Monday Riot are hosting an afternoon meet and greet to get to meet the players and members of the group. Spring is coming….right? _ – Laura Gauthier _ ** Saturday, February 28: The Mix on CKCU 93.1 FM presents hiphop at the Daily Grind ** CKCU FM’s The Mix presents a night of live hip-hop at the Daily Grind this Saturday, February 28. The show will feature live art as well as sets by homegrown hip-hop artists Poetic Elements, Just Poets, Circa Beatz, Jessica Anbara and more and it’s only $5 at the door. _ – Eliane Laberge, Eventful Capital _ ** Saturday, February 28: Rake-Star Plays Sun Ra at Mugshots ** For the past 15 years, Ottawa’s Rake-star Arkestra has tried to capture the joy and passion of renowned jazz iconoclast Sun Ra. Sun Ra was a composer and bandleader who combined costumes and pageantry with bebop and big band jazz and his deep interests in aliens from outer space and Egyptology. At the Mugshots pub in the old Jail Hostel, the 9-piece Arkestra will play and celebrate Sun Ra’s music in a performance that should open your ears while shaking the stone walls with its grooves. Children and teenagers get a type of arthritis called juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), which can be incredibly painful and if not treated properly can lead to permanent joint damage. Currently 1 in 1000 Canadian children, under the age of 16 suffer from this disease and as of yet there is no cure.
