** : Paper Crane Challenge and Origami Workshop **

Help raise awareness of peace by helping to make 1000 paper cranes to hang in the Bank of Canada vault for the museum’s Building Peace exhibition. Learn how to make paper cranes and other origami pieces. Then help decorate and fold a huge paper crane!

** Thursday, August 8: Frahm/Ellias/Geggie and Eagles/McGowan/Essoudry at the Carleton University Jazz Camp **

NYC saxophonist Joel Frahm was last in Ottawa in spring 2012, playing in a strong concert in John Geggie’s Invitational series. He’s back this week at the Carleton University Jazz Camp, and on Thursday will play again with Geggie, and guitarist Roddy Ellias, for what promises to be a meeting of masters. The Jazz Camp is offering concerts every evening this week for only $10 a night (a bargain!) in Kailash Mital Theatre (the former Southam Hall) at Carleton University.

** ** Friday, August 9: International Day of the World’s Indigenous People Concert **

Three multitalented artists—Montreal-based spoken word artist Moe Clark and Ottawa-based performers Melody McKiver and Vera Wabegijig—are at the Carleton University Art Gallery at 7 p.m. for an evening of words, music and multimedia performance. Before the show, check out the gallery’s exhibit of works by

artist Rebecca Belmore and the Tyler/Brooks Collection of Inuit Art.

** Friday August 9 : Nature Nocturne Star Wars themed party **

Calling all Jedi, Star Wars fans, and people who love to have a good time. The Canadian Museum of Nature and Canada Aviation and Space Museum are joining forces to present a Star Wars themed Nature Nocturne event on Friday, August 9 from 9 PM to 1 AM. Tickets are $20. Food and drink sold separately. Must be 19 and older. I.D. required. **

** ** Saturday, August 10: Manotick Antique & Classic Boat Show ** Come and enjoy fine examples of Ottawa’s boating past at the 38th annual antique & classic boat show. Gorgeous wooden boats from the 1900’s to present day dock in the waters of Long Island locks in Manotick for a fun, in-water historical boat display. Vendors, food, and other activities are planned.

** ** Saturday-Sunday, August 10-11: Puppets Up! **

Puppets take over Almonte this weekend for the annual puppet festival. At the very least you have to go for the (free) parade, both days at 1:45pm through Almonte’s charming downtown. You can buy a festival pass and check out performances by ten puppet companies from Canada, the United States and Hungary. ( Here are some photos I took at a previous edition of the festival. )

The 18th edition of the Casino du Lac-Leamy Sound of Light fireworks festival kicks off this Saturday featuring the team Flash Art Dubai, The Show and Effects representing the United Arab Emirates and continues on Wednesday with the team from Højen & Magic Fireworks representing Denmark. In addition to some world-class fireworks, there are lots of activities throughout the site and shows on the Tim Hortons stage. The site opens at 6pm , the fireworks start around 9:30pm and everything wraps up at 11pm .

At the Canada Science and Technology Museum, 9:00pm. Relax at this outdoor movie night while keeping an eye out for shooting stars. Bring a lawn chair and blanket to take in the film, or stargaze through telescopes on the grounds. (Free program, strictly weather permitting.)
