Opinions wanted: Tobogganing or Sledding?

Tobogganing at the Arboretum in the Experimental Farm.
hoto by Juliette Giannesini.

Looking for your opinion:

Should we call the act of sliding down a snowy hill on a wooden or plastic device “tobogganing” or “sledding”?

I’m partial to tobogganing as a catch-all for riding on everything from those old wooden sleds to crazy carpets.  It sounds more Canadian.  But lately I’ve been hearing more and more people refer to it as “sledding”.

(Or do you call it something else entirely, like “sliding”?)

Tell me what you think in the comments below.

It depends what you're sliding on. You can take a sled down the hill, or you can take a toboggan. Toboggans are flat, but sleds have blades.

whoa whoa &quot;toboggan&quot; still in use make no mistake – it&#39;s just became less cool when GT snow racer and crazy carpet hit the market… err slopes. <br />Tobogganing always hurt my knees… i never seemed to master the art of where to put my feet.. under the curve at the front? Sit on them? Something that #kidsfromthe80&#39;s worried about. <br />Brighton, ON

Tobogganing is only for when you use a toboggan. Sledding sounds awkward to me, and really only applies to those things with runners. Sliding is the best term. It encompasses everything.

Tobogganing is what we use… Sledding is something we do on a ski-doo 🙂

  6. A toboggan is a kind of sled…<br />(ref Merriam-Webster) Relatively few people own toboggans these days.

Those in the <a href="http://mymuskoka.blogspot.com/2011/03/snowmobiles-in-osgoode.html&quot; rel="nofollow">snowmobile cult </a>call them sleds! Sledding is done by sledders on those machines!

  8. From time to time people call it sliding, which works for me because I&#39;m all about the crazy carpet!

Tobagans don&#39;t have blades/runners<br />Sleds do.<br /><br />So a hill can have both sledders and tobogganer depending on the vehicle they are using.<br /><br />Makes you wonder what a crazy carpet falls under!

Sliding!!!<br />It can be used if you are using a GT, sled, toboggan, crazy carpet or even a garbage bag. It&#39;s called sliding because you are sliding down the hill. The sliding is the fun part no matter what you use.
