Nordic Arctic Days at the Canadian Museum of Nature, Oct. 1921

Explore Nordic culture in the Arctic through film, displays, photos and crafts. The Canadian Museum of Nature, along with participating embassies representing the countries of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland and Finland, is pleased to present Nordic Arctic Days from October 19 to 21.

Highlights include a free film night on Thursday, October 19, beginning at 7 pm. The four, adult-oriented, short films are: The Reindeer Belong to the Wind (39 min., Finland; English sub-titles); Iceland Aurora (27 min.); Northern Great Mountain (15 min., Sweden; English sub-titles); and Seven Boats (10 min., Denmark). On Saturday, October 21, films will be shown that will appeal to children: Operation Arctic (89 min. , Norway; English sub-titles); The Flight before Christmas (92 min., Finland); The Arctic Fox (34 min., Iceland; English sub-titles) and Áigin (10 min., Finland; English sub-titles).

A special Lavvo—a traditional tent dwelling of the Sami people—will be the centerpiece of the museum’s rotunda. Inside the Lavvo visitors can touch reindeer skins, listen to Sámi music, and enjoy books and colouring. Other activities in the rotunda will include crafts (making a snow lantern or a rock troll) and a photo booth. Also in the rotunda are 30 fascinating photos by Fred Ivar Utsi Klemetsen that depict the life of Sámi reindeer herders over a span of 16 years.

In the Nordic Hub in the museum’s Lantern, visitors will find information displays presented by the embassies of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland.

And on the 4th floor, the museum’s new Canada Goose Arctic Gallery is a must-see. It presents the Arctic’s rich natural diversity and its important connections to humans through numerous specimens, artifacts, interactive exhibits and a mesmerizing multimedia installation with real ice.

All activities are included in museum admission. The museum is free on Thursday evening from 5 pm to 8 pm.

The Canadian Museum of Nature is at 240 McLeod St, Ottawa. Follow the museum on Twitter, on Instagram (museumofnature), and like the museum on Facebook.
