City seeking public input on three commemorative naming proposals

The City of Ottawa Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultations on three separate naming proposals to:

 * 
Rename the North Gower Bowling Alley as “Gerry Lines Bowling Alley”

 * 
Rename Arena 1 within the Ray Friel Recreation Complex as “Ron Racette Arena”

 * 
Name the kitchen in the Tanglewood Park Community Centre as the “Franz Gierer Kitchen”

** Gerry Lines Bowling Alley (Ward 21 – Rideau-Goulbourn) ** In recognition of Gerry Lines’ extensive community service, the City of Ottawa has been asked to rename the North Gower Bowling Alley as the “Gerry Lines Bowling Alley”.

 

Gerry Lines served as president of the North Gower Community Centre Board for 11 years. During that time, the Board managed the community centre, the ball diamond, boys’ and girls’ ball teams, as well as the outdoor arena and hockey. Gerry was also instrumental in the development and construction of various recreational facilities in his community, many of which continue to be enjoyed by residents of North Gower.

 

View the online proposal for the “Gerry Lines Bowling Alley”. ** Ron Racette Arena (Ward 1 – Orléans) ** In recognition of Ron Racette’s historical significance to the community, the City of Ottawa has been asked to rename Arena 1 within the Ray Friel Recreation Complex as the “Ron Racette Arena”.

 

A native of Orléans, Ron was an avid and accomplished athlete. Ron dedicated most of his hockey career to coaching. In particular, he led the Cornwall Royals to the league championship, Western Division in 1972–1973 and 1973–1974 and, while coaching the Quebec Ramparts in 1975-1976, he was awarded the President’s Cup.

 

View the online proposal for the “Ron Racette Arena”. ** Franz Gierer Kitchen (Ward 9 – Knoxdale-Merivale) ** In recognition of Franz Gierer’s extensive community service, the City of Ottawa has been asked to name the kitchen n the Tanglewood Park Community Centre as the “Franz Gierer Kitchen”.

 

Franz Gierer served the Tanglewood-Hillsdale Community Association as its volunteer coordinator for more than 10 years, and oversaw delivery of the association’s newsletter to 1,850 households. Franz also gave of his time and talents to the Nepean, Rideau and Osgoode Community Resource Centre, the Ward Hockey Day, the St. Monica Parish Social Life Committee and the St. Monica Parish Finance Council.
