Positive role model, lasting influence, remarkable input, and global citizen –are just a few of the things being said about the thirty-two young men and women who will receive Ottawa-Carleton District School Board Student Recognition Awards on Thursday, June 4, 2015. The aim of the event is to celebrate excellence in high school student leadership.
Administrators and teachers from all twenty-six day high schools and six alternate sites, including continuing Urban Aboriginal Alternate High School and Continuing Education put forward nominees for student recognition. The student’s stories are very different but they do have one thing in common – they believe they can make a difference – and they have!
Some of these students and their families are new to Canada; some have dropped out of school and dropped back in and; some have been straight A students since they entered Kindergarten. It is their uniqueness that makes them so interesting – yet in the end their nominators all report the same thing – these young people made a positive, lasting impact on the culture of their school community.
Director of Education Dr. Jennifer Adams says, “Strong leaders lead by example. These young men and women have taken on challenges, shown initiative, and persevered with integrity. They have demonstrated the value of good citizenship and the importance of character.”
The student award for Excellence in Equity will also be handed out at the Student Recognition evening.
The Student Recognition Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, June 4th. Presentations get underway at7:30 p.m. and will be complete by 9:00 p.m. The event takes place at Centurion Conference and Event Centre located at 170 Colonnade Road South.
