A photographic lament for Ottawa's corner stores

A recent post from the KitchissippiKids blog about corner stores led us to this great collection of photos of neighbourhood corner stores in Ottawa . They’re from photographer Patrick Dumais and were taken a few years back.

Before we moved to the suburbs, we used to live across the street from Mike’s Corner Store at the corner of Elm and Rochester. It’s one of the things I miss the most about our old neighbourhood. Mike immigrated from Lebanon a long time ago and has operated the store for years with his family. Each year at Christmas he’d give all his regular customers a box of After Eight chocolates. I can’t remember any day it was actually closed either – Mike or his wife were behind the counter every day of the year. Wish we had something like that out here in Stittsville.
